Atlanta is the capital, and largest city in the state of Georgia, the United States with its population as of 2010 is about 420,003. Additionally, it is the ninth populous metropolitan area in the U.S at 5,268,860. This city got its name from railroad engineer J. Edgar Thompson with Atlanta usually thought to be a summarized version of “Atlantica-Pacifica.” During the civil war, Atlanta was the only North American city to be destroyed during the war. Union General William T. Sherman ordered it be burnt to the ground, sparing only hospitals and churches which were among the 400 buildings to survive. It is because of this that the city’s symbol is a phoenix. Furthermore, this city has played a massive role in the Civil Rights Movement as it was the center where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and students from the historically black colleges would organize their meetings. The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and Southern Christian Leadership which are the two most prominent organizations were centered in Atlanta. Finally, Atlanta has the busiest airport in the world, the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. It is strategically located to travel to many of the major American cities since flights from this city to the other cities is approximately three hours.
