About Mount Aragats

Mount Aragats, a towering extinct volcano in Armenia, is the highest point in both Amenia and the entire Lesser Caucasus range. Named after the ancient Armenian god Ara, it is comprised of 4 peaks, the highest of which is 13,420 feet. The ruins of the 7th-century fortress of Amberd are on the south-western slopes. The entire Mount Aragats region is rich in ancient history and legend. Scientists are still struggling to understand the secrets of the mysterious mountain road on the way to Mount Aragats, where legends (and witnesses) say that water sometimes flows uphill. Artifacts around the area include rock paintings portraying human and animal figures from the early Holocene age and other petroglyphs that date back to the 4th millennia BCE.
